Diners Club Card History

In 1950 a guy called Frank McNamara was out having dinner with some friends, when the time came to pay Frank realized that he had no money as he had forgotten to pick up his wallet! This started a trend that we know and many of us live by today, the MODERN CREDIT CARD. Frank McNamara, along with a partner went on to create the DINERS CLUB CARD, No longer would people be bound to only the cash they had on them.

Initially the Diners Club Card was a business mans card, which was available for dinners and retail purchases whilst travelling, but it soon became a much larger phenomenon. The Diners Club Card soon became a national frenzy, which even prompted a Hollywood movie. Business men from all over the country loved the idea that they could pay for their travel expenditures and worry about the cost later. McNamara and his partner were also very happy, because when people don’t carry cash they tend to spend more!

In 1955 Western airlines were accepting the Diners Club Card against flight payments. Within tens years, all the other major airlines had followed suit. McNamara and his partner had niow paved the way for the curent system of credit cards by securing the travelers market, through airlines, retail stores and restaurants. It became an amazing business venture, with the Diners Club Card still being one of the top.
