Bunk Beds for Kids

Posted by  Search EzineArticles.com   on: 2005-08-15 14:47:52

Bunks beds have been a very popular piece of furniture for many years. It is quite versatile and can save a lot of room esp. in small cramp bedrooms. A bunk bed is a type of bed in which one bed is stacked on top of another. They are typically used as furnishings in children's rooms, allowing two children to sleep in the same room while maximizing available floor space. They normally are supported by four poles at each corner of the bed. To get to the second bunk a ladder is used, though taller children often find other faster methods of climbing into them. The top bed normally is surrounded by a railing to prevent the sleeper from falling out.

They are great space savers, but also they can be dangerous as well if kids are not told how to stay safe! Did you know each year; thousands of children go to the hospital for emergency room treatment for injuries associated with bunk beds? Most of these injuries are minor and occur when children fall from the top bunk. Children playing and fighting frequently contributes to these mishaps. Teach children that rough play is very unsafe around and on beds and other types of furniture. There are even “thankfully rare” instances of very serious hazards associated with bunk beds that have suffocation or hanging deaths.

To keep your children safe there are some tips you can follow. One very important rule is not to permit kids less than 6 years of age to sleep in the upper bunk. This one rule can help to prevent many accidents. In fact I would enforce the younger ones not to even get up there at all for any reason, less chance of children falling from there.

Just as important as that tip, is to always use two side guardrails on the upper bunk! Keep guardrails securely in place at all times no matter what the age of the child. Children move around during sleep and may roll out of bed into the floor.

Make sure the kids know to use the ladder properly and safely. Also they should be told to use the ladder at all times and not to try to climb the bed to the top. They should be reminded this is used for sleeping and rest, bunk beds are not toys or used for fun! Follow theses simple tips and you should be ok.
