How Helping Others To Make Money Makes You Money

Posted by Jeff Griffin on: 2005-07-29 20:52:16

What I am about to introduce to some of you may be anathema. That means something that you cannot agree with no matter how hard you try. It is sadly true that the American society is a”me”society. I can’t tell you how many times a week I hear that phrase “it’s all about me”. When you get right down to it is hard for me to understand how anyone can say that. Even in jest, it is abhorrent to me. That’s not to say that I am holding myself up as a saint. Heaven forbid! Still, we seem to be too self-centered. That is why the philosophy of this article may be difficult for some to assimilate or, in other words, make it their own.

Introducing the Law Of Reciprocity

There is a law in this universe called the law of reciprocity. Some of you may have heard of it. Others may not, at least using that description. But, I’d be willing to bet that nearly everyone has heard the phrase “what goes around comes around.” For example, if you lash out at someone for something they did, you can expect them to lash back at you. It may even occur at a different time when you least expect it. That would be part of “the payback is hell” philosophy.

We are so conditioned to living in the negative that it takes conscious thought for quite a while before our thought patterns begin to change. Because of that we tend to see all the negative things that happen and forget that the positive things that happen to us are just as much a part of the law of reciprocity as negative things.

In the most direct terms I can write on this page is that we receive good rewards for doing good things for someone else and bad results for doing bad things to someone. Karma is what the Hindu and Buddhists call it. And that brings us to the point I am trying to make and how it relates to running your business to make a profit.

When you help others make money you help yourself make money. If you stop and think about it, you will see that is why the internet marketing gurus are in such high demand.

They constantly generate products that help others to be successful. Whether they are creating software to fill a purpose or whether they are encouraging the troops with an ebook on how to improve your way of doing business. The topic of internet marketing is one of the most searched-for topics in search engines. Can you see the reason why? The law of reciprocity is why the gurus make the money they do.

It Make Sense to Try Affiliate Marketing

Now, there is no end to the subjects or niche markets that one can find or create to serve. However, when you are just beginning an internet marketing venture there is one way to cut the distance down to the profit finish line. That method is affiliate marketing.
The affiliate marketer participates willingly and gladly with the law of reciprocity.

Affiliate marketing, you see, is truly a two-way street. If you run an ad or presents someone’s product on your page and it sells you have helped the creator of that product earn some reward for his or her labor. The product creator makes money and you, of course, make your affiliate percentage for participating in the sale of the product. The arrangement is strictly according to the law of reciprocity.

Interestingly, the scenario above also has the flip side to it. The creator of the product makes more money by offering an affiliate program to others. He is helping others to make money while he is making money himself. Some would call that a win-win situation. That is true, it is. Still it falls well within the bounds of the law of reciprocity.

Now, let’s look at another facet of the law of reciprocity. Have you ever wondered why marketers are some of the richest people around? Well, think about how the average mini-site sales letter operates. It operates like this: I’ll sell you this ebook for this price, but I’ll throw in all these extra goodies to get you to take your credit card out and pay for it now. That works fairly well.

Sure, the bottom line is that the marketer is rewarded with a sale by using extra value to make the sale. On a higher level, though, he is increasing his chance of reward without even thinking of it in those terms. If you increase the perceived value of what you are selling it makes for a more enticing buy for the buyer. Yet, it causes greater rewards to come the sellers way as well. It is the law of reciprocity in action.

Good Will Can Also Cause Good Returns

There are an incredible number of ways that we as marketers can increase the chances of good things coming back to us. For example, enforcing a money-back no questions asked guarantee. If someone wants their money back then cheerfully refund it. Arguing about it will put you on the wrong side of the law of reciprocity.

I have heard of several instances where the marketer actually made a later sale to the same customer on another product in their stable because of a cheerful refund. Go figure, but it happens.

Another way that we as marketers can increase our returns is to go out of our way to help others to learn this trade. There are many ins and outs and we all walk the same road but are at different points along that road.

We can help make someone else’s journey shorter by giving them encouragement, free advice, or specific training on a specific task that is giving them trouble. What do you think the result will be? We will receive something similar somewhere along our journey when we need that little bit of extra help.

The best way to look at the whole process of marketing is to remember the law of reciprocity. The best way I can explain it is to give value to those that seek it. Give encouragement to those that need it. And most of all learn to graciously accept it when it comes back to you. Here’s to all the success you can stand.
