Hypnosis in Our Daily Lives

Posted by By Alan Richardson on: 2005-07-12 00:48:46

Ask most people about hypnosis and the majority fear it, primarily based on many misconceptions. For instance, some believe that they could be manipulated while in a hypnotic trance, while others assert that they would be unable to be hypnotized.

In truth,no one under hypnosis can be made to do anything that they would not do while in a conscious state. And as for the ability to be hypnotized, many people enter hypnotic states throughout their day but they are unaware of it. As an example, the next time you walk into an office where a co-worker is busy composing a memo or working on a presentation, watch their face as they look up from their work. You will notice that their eyes change and adjust as they rise up to meet yours. That is because your co-worker was in an “alpha state”, which is a mild form of hypnosis. Many creative people spend a lot of time in the alpha state every day.

A more familiar form of the alpha state is the common occurrence of arriving home without really remembering the drive. In an alpha state, our sub-conscious exerts more control than when we are fully conscious, and we act on “automatic pilot”. Hypnosis is simply a deeper alpha state. We are aware of everything going on around us, but we are not bothered with the minute-to-minute worries that usually surround our day. Once we are in the deeper alpha state we are able to undergo hypnotherapy(the therapy that occurs while a person is under hypnosis), where problems can be addressed in a positive and reassuring way.

There have been many successful cases of people using hypnosis to lose weight, stop smoking, and make other self improvements. They have put their conscious mind to sleep using hypnosis and opened up their sub-conscious to new problem-solving techniques that get rid of negative thoughts and bring positive change to the way they think.
